Salsa Lessons
Tell me about salsa:
Salsa dancing in London is thriving. There’s a whole host of salsa classes across the capital to choose from. Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you and cherry picked the best of the bunch and managed to get you a free taster to make it as easy as possible to try out.
Is it really for me?
If you’re new to salsa, then it’s probably one of those things that’s lathered in preconceptions. Perhaps you think of Cuba or Brazil, maybe good-looking, carefree people moving to a beat that you fast reject as something you'll never be dancing to. But like all those far removed things, your preconception is way off. Prepare to be delightfully surprised. For starters, it's actually really easy to pick up, at least to pick up enough to join in. And joining in is what it's all about. Some people arrive to beginner salsa classes on their own and contribute to an eclectic mix of people, young and old. When I arrived at Milo's East London class, I soon got chatting to a Bangladeshi salsa extraordinaire, who was just popping in to say hello. He arrived in London on his own and found salsa a great way to meet people. Because when the music starts, the old cliché lives: music knows no boundaries, you're all joined by something that you're all equally novice at, and when that happens, it really is a lot of fun. Most classes have a club afterwards and if you're feeling brave, or maybe just feeling the Bacardi, you can stay and strut your newly learnt skills! Have fun salsa dancing in London!
What else do I need to know:
Dress: Casual and comfortable
Cost: Free with TasterLab.com (normal cost between £5-£10 per class)
Great for: Meeting people, having fun without needing to drink a lot
What class should I try? See guide below.
Beginner: Just the basic steps to get you dancing.
Beginner 1: Revised basic steps, develop partner work, learn basic moves
Beginner 2: A slightly more advanced stage of Beginner 1.
Improvers: Techniques mastered for stepping the turns and fluid lead. The dance moves become more complicated, often putting two together.
Intermediate: Dance partners learn to spin. Shines involve using every beat and syncopation.
Advanced: You'll have fully mastered all the salsa techniques and will start to finesse complicated turn patterns.
